A seventeen-year-old Jehovah’s witness with metastatic Ewing sarcoma initially declined cancer therapy due to the risk of life-threatening bone marrow suppression. He then subsequently agreed other treatment options bloodless supportive care measures in order achieve quality life and long-term control his disease. This case report adds collective knowledge providing including for patients cancer.

ERBB4 confers metastatic capacity in Ewing sarcoma
Metastatic spread is the single-most powerful predictor of poor outcome in Ewing sarcoma (ES). Therefore targeting pathways that drive metastasis has tremendous potential to reduce the burden of disease in ES. We previously showed that activation of the ERBB4 tyrosine kinase suppresses anoikis, or detachment-induced cell death, and induces chemoresistance in ES cell lines in vitro. We now show ...
متن کاملDramatic Response to Cisplatin Window Therapy in a Boy With Advanced Metastatic Ewing Sarcoma
Ewing sarcoma (ES) is the second most common type of primary bone malignancy, and retains a high propensity to metastasize; the prognosis of patients with disseminated disease is very poor, with an event-free survival rate of <20%. Current multimodality treatment for ES consists of combined chemotherapy before and concurrent with surgery and local radiotherapy for the involved bone. Cisplatin i...
متن کاملTargeted Therapy in Ewing Sarcoma
Despite marked improvement in the prognosis of patients with nonmetastatic Ewing sarcoma (ES), the outcome for patients with recurrent or metastatic disease remains poor. Insight into key biologic processes in ES could provide new therapeutic targets. The particular biologic feature of ES, the fusion of the EWS gene with a member of the ETS family of genes, is present in >95% of cases. The EWS-...

Despite the advances in oncology, the survival of children with Ewing Sarcoma metastatic at diagnosis continues to be 27% 3-year event-free survival and 34% 3-year overall survival. In other words, 7 of 10 children die within 3 years of their initial diagnosis despite intense chemotherapy, local treatment (radiation/surgery), and/or high dose busulfan-melphalan and autologous stem-cell transpla...
متن کاملCurrent Therapeutic Approaches in Metastatic and Recurrent Ewing Sarcoma
Ewing sarcoma (ES) is the second most common type of primary bone malignancy in children and young adults. Survival rates for localized ES have improved to upwards of 70% with aggressive chemotherapy and local control. On the other hand, there has been little improvement in survival rates for patients with metastatic or recurrent ES. Herein we review the different current therapeutic approaches...
